Breitling's Genuine GMT

In true Breitling fashion, the Avenger's design language is attractive and strong. At first glance, it has a lot to offer, including a muscular profile, a rotating bezel with rider tabs, and a crisp--some might even say polar--white dial.

At 43mm in diameter, and around 12mm thick, the Avenger is bold but proportional. The masculine aesthetic continues with thick applied hour indices, broad hands, and an emergency-red GMT hand. Oh, and the classic Breitling wings logo is a nice touch.

By the numbers, this watch offers 300 meters of water resistance and 42 hours of power reserve. And although its movement is based on an ETA, and therefore not "in-house," it is still a solid performer.

The 21 jewel movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and is kept hidden behind a solid case back. (As an aside, the Marvel superhero-esque "Avenger" engraving on the case back is, admittedly, a stylistic shortcoming).

The most impressive figure, though, may be its price. At a touch above $3k on the grey market, this watch offers something rare in the watch world: value for money.

As for competition, there is of course the Rolex Explorer II. However, given the fact that the Rolex costs nearly three times as much, and is not available at authorized dealers, that comparison is more theoretical than anything.

In sum, the Breitling Avenger GMT is quality watch with effortless good looks that is widely available in stores. In other words, it's what a Rolex once was, which is high praise indeed.
