A Silver Bullet

According to Breitling, the Chronomat B01 42 is their "all-purpose watch". More importantly, it may become their flagship.

As a brand, Breitling is best known for its chronographs. While they make dive watches (which are excellent), that isn't really their thing. Ditto for dress watches. Breitling DNA is all about beefy, robust sport watches with an aviator's flair. Traditionally, of course, that means one thing: the Navitimer.

The Navitimer is an undeniably nice watch, but it's got a few flaws. First, it's not really water resistant (a mere 30 meters), which is a key consideration for an "all-purpose" sports watch. Second, its complex dial is a touch too busy for daily wear. Third, its bracelet leaves something to be desired (though it's often on leather, and appropriately so.)

Overall, then, the Navitimer--with its weak water resistance, luxurious leather straps, and intricate dial--is a bit...delicate. Ironically, then, the brand's poster child is, perhaps, not the ideal ambassador.

The Chronomat, on the other hand, is the best of what Breitling has to offer.

First and foremost, it has stunning good looks. A Blog to Watch says: "I don't think the dial will leave anyone thinking anything but, 'That's a handsome watch.'" Amen.

Second, its got history and credibility. The Chronomat was introduced in the 80s, when extra-thin quartz watches were all the rage. In true Breitling fashion, it was a contrarian move--a gamble on big, bold mechanical watches.

Third, it has all the right features, including:

  • a 42 mm case and an iconic rotating bezel

  • 200 meters of water resistance

  • the signature “Rouleaux” bracelet, which is a masterclass in quality

  • a range of striking colors, including blue and silver

While it shares the in-house Manufacture Caliber 01 with its Breitling brethren, the Chronomat still stands out as an impressive offering.

In fact, it does more than challenge the Navitimer. It also gives other legendary chronographs, including the Omega Speedmaster and Rolex Daytona, a run for their money.

Now, that's bold. That's Breitling.
